VertueLab is a nonprofit fighting the climate crisis by providing funding and holistic entrepreneurial support to cleantech startups. The Human Resources Manager is a full-time employee responsible for leading our people and culture. As a key member of our Operations team, this individual provides direct support in setting and realizing our strategic goals through our HR operations, along with executing operational and tactical tasks in their area of responsibility. Specific responsibilities of the position include:

Talent Acquisition: Leads our hiring and onboarding processes to ensure we have the right team in place to execute our mission and strategic goals. Working directly with hiring managers, oversees a streamlined and equitable interviewing and hiring process. Supports the successful onboarding of new staff. Remains current on hiring best practices along with networks and partnerships in our region that will help identify/attract qualified candidates that are passionate about our mission, resonate with our values, and have a combination of life and professional experiences that make them well-suited to join us in this work.

Policy and Practices: Develops and implements equitable HR policies and practices. Updates employment policies and maintains the employee handbook in compliance with federal, state and local laws and in response to changes in internal operating procedures. Utilizes HR best practices to inform current and future practices. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal and state employment laws to ensures HR compliance in all office locations.

Strategic Planning: Supports strategic planning initiatives through thought partnership and collaboration with the senior leadership team regarding recruitment pipeline development, hiring, employee relations, performance issues, professional development, and training.

Employee Relations: Serves as a safe space for employees to turn to with any HR issues or concerns. Acts as a source of information and support for all employees in human resources management and work-related matters. Assist with conflict resolution as needed. Maintains confidentiality and follows standard operating procedures related to conflict resolution and escalation of employee concerns.

Compensation and Benefits: Develops, implements, and maintains a comprehensive total rewards package (compensation and benefits plans) that are competitive, cost-effective and aligned with our mission and values.

Performance Management: Oversees performance management process by coaching leaders and staff on goal setting, progress monitoring, formal and informal performance-related conversations, the annual review process and ongoing growth and development activities. Helps evaluate and identify ways to maximize performance of employees.

HR Administration: Administration of HR information systems and other key systems central to people-centered operations. Researches and recommends system and process improvements. Ensures digital and hardcopy files are maintained, secured and in compliance with federal, state, local and internal standards. Directs implementation plan of employee benefits administration including enrollment and selections of insurance and retirement plans.

Employee Engagement and Retention: Envisions, plans and executes employee engagement and retention strategies. Utilizes surveys, staff feedback and informal observations to inform plans and recommendations.

This role is part of the Operations Team and provides support across the organization, working closely with our President and Executive Director, Deputy Director & Director of Impact Strategy, and the Finance and Operations Manager in support of organizational operations related to people and culture. As a part of the Operations team, the Human Resources Manager inputs into and owns specific aspects of the organizational strategic plan and helps guide the operationalizing of the strategic plan. The Human Resources Manager reports to the Deputy Director & Director of Impact Strategy.


Successful candidates for the Human Resources Manager role will have:

  • Alignment with VertueLab’s mission to unleash innovation and entrepreneurship that will solve environmental challenges and catalyze shared economic prosperity.
  • 5-7 years of HR generalist experience with skill set and knowledge in key process areas.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry trends and HR best practices applied in a nonprofit or small business environment.
  • Ability to navigate employee relations/concerns by researching and recommending solutions.
  • Translates business goals and objectives into policy, procedures and systems
  • Knowledgeable of employment laws. Organized and detail oriented to ensure accurate records and compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with staff, leaders, and partners to ensure a positive work environment.
  • System administration experience with HR information systems.
  • Commitment to, comprehensive understanding of, and demonstrated experience in ensuring diversity, equity, inclusion and justice are not mere buzz words but help guide decision making, policies, practices and organizational norms.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty.
  • The adaptability required to thrive in a dynamic environment.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to understanding the breadth of the work and remaining curious about innovations in the field.


  • Industry recognized certification such as PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP
  • Interest in clean and climate tech
  • Experience working in a non-profit organization
  • Strong preference for a team member located in the Pacific Northwest region of the US

Limited travel is expected in the near term due to COVID. Any future travel will likely be within the Pacific Northwest region.

Pay and Benefits

The compensation for this full-time position is an annual salary of $80,000, accompanied by a competitive benefits package including:

  • 4 weeks of vacation
  • 1 day of paid volunteer time off per quarter
  • 10 days of sick/bereavement leave
  • Medical/dental insurance
  • 401k matching - VertueLab will match an employee’s contributions to their 401k up to a maximum of 4% of their salary.
